Eco School

Cardinal Allen is proud to be a holder of 8 Eco Schools Green Flag awards over 17 years, demonstrating our commitment to environmental issues. In 2014 we were awarded Eco-Schools Ambassador status and in 2019 we were awarded Eco schools National Secondary School of the Year. Our Eco Club meets each week. They have worked closely with the Wyre Ranger Service, Willows Garden trust, Wyre Disability Centre, Fleetwood Memorial Park, Fleetwood in Bloom and North Fylde Rotary club to enhance our local environment. Our school grounds are now amongst the most biodiverse school grounds in the county boasting a woodland, an environmental corridor, a wildflower meadow, an orchard, an allotment, a remembrance garden and an apiary. Our school apiary contains 4 hives. The profits from the honey and beeswax products the students produce are used to fund projects to develop the biodiversity of our local environments.

Fair Trade

Cardinal Allen was the first Fairtrade School in the country and is proud of its link with the Fairtrade movement. Our aim is to educate pupils, staff, parents and friends of the school about the benefits of Fairtrade. Millions of farmers depend on selling their crops to survive, but when prices drop, it can spell disaster. If farmers earn less than it costs to run their farm, they face real hardship. Fairtrade makes sure that farmers and producer organisations get a fair and stable price for their products to help them support their families and invest in a better future.

As a school we are committed to using Fairtrade products as much as possible, learning about how global trade works, understanding why Fairtrade is important and how we can take action for Fairtrade in the school and the wider community.  This means that pupils are able to develop new skills as they learn about the work of Fairtrade, have a positive influence on the school and wider community as they work with staff to promote the values of Fairtrade and become part of something which is having an impact all over the world.

Fundraising

Our pupils put a lot of effort into fundraising; as well as whole school events including non-uniform days and Christmas Jumpers day, each year group chooses a charity to support and raises money towards that. At Lent the whole school commits to fundraising for charitable causes. Over recent years our school has raised thousands of pounds for charitable causes including CAFOD, Blackpool Food Partnership, Fleetwood Food Bank, Mary’s Meals, Streetlife, Brian House, Trinity Hospice, the British Heart Foundation, Variety Club, Newman School and many others.
